A lot of people spend time
talking to animals but not that many people listen. That's the real problem.

"I
am passionate about dogs and our relationships with them. For me,
training is all about helping you have the relationship you want with the
dog you have. On the whole I think dogs make much better followers
than leaders and it is our responsibility to guide.. I have been studying dog behaviour for 15 years and on the way I have
been blessed to have had the support and encouragement from some of Canada's
finest trainers Carolyn
Clark, Heather
Logan and Bob Ottenbrite.
I am committed to continuing education because our level of understanding of dogs, their behaviour, our behaviour and our relationships with them is constantly improving. To that end I attend a variety of educational events every year. Last year among other things I attended an awesome tracking seminar with Lucy Newton as well as a weekend for trainers with Kathy Sdao in Boston. In June 2010 I went to Calgary for the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers annual educational Conference and spent a full day with Steve White which was excellent. I also saw Karen Pryor, an animal training icon and even had dinner with her! A great event. This fall I hope to do tracking with Lucy Newton again.
I have taken and passed an exam administered by the Certification Council of Pet Dog Trainers, an independent testing organization and am the first Certified Professional Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) in Nova Scotia.
I am a professional member and Regional Director of the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers and a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers as well as the CKC and the Pictou County Kennel Club and did I say, I really like dogs?
Call me and lets talk about you and your dog." Alex Keir CPDT-KA
Setting you and
your dog up for success!
The MethodOur dog training program aims to be both fun and effective for people and their dogs and at the same time gentle and mutually respectful. It's all about the relationship! The approach is based on an understanding of how dogs learn and the fundamental thread is that reinforcement builds and maintains behaviour. Positive but not permissive clicker training helps you get the behaviour you want from your dog while you develop a willing training partner and become a team. Using a sound followed by a reward to let your dog know they got it right! Clicker training is a gentle, effective method of training that is based on rewarding behaviour that we like. This engages both you and your dog in the learning process. Who Should Train the Dog?All family members are invited to come to class. Children under 8 must be accompanied by another adult. If younger children are part of the family an adult can train the dog and then the children can ask for behaviours once the dog has learned them
